1955 Ferrari 121 Le Mans

History

Factory team car. Leading the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1955 with driver Castelloti leading for 6 hours before engine problems forced him to pull out of the race.
In a race the following year the car was damaged. The entire front end was damaged. A restoration was attempted in the UK, however, the result was unfaithfull to the original design.
The owner, wanting to restore the car to its original form, commissioned Eurocoachworks in 1982 to complete the project.

Work

  • The improperly restored nose was removed and following indepth research using film footage and pictures from the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the original shape was recreated.
  • The first step was to create a Manechino ("a mannequin") - a wireframe of the design. Using the wireframe template the body was manually hand hammered into shape. Grills and covered head lamps were also reproduced.
  • The final result was nearly inditinguishable from the original. The car went on to win a concourse award.
